Course Objectives:
Participants will:
- Learn to identify the concept of international security
- Be able to place the notion of international security in the wider context of the study of political science and international relations
- Achieve insights into the meaning, subjects, and objects of security
- Learn about the various theoretical approaches into international security
- Learn how these theoretical approaches may be of value to practitioners
- Identify contemporary security problems
- Uncover today’s biggest security challenges, including climate change, terrorism, and pandemics with a focus on the African continent
Course Outcome(s):
Participants will have secured:
- In-depth insight into the basic concept of international security studies, including:
- Theories of international security, both traditional and modern
- The varying concepts of international security
- Relate these different theoretical approaches by identifying their similarities and differences
- The root causes of conflict
- The skills needed to analyse the complex global context in which security challenges manifest through having learnt the fundamentals necessary to understand basic problems in international security now and in the future
- Insights obtained from current case studies displaying security challenges from the African continent
- An understanding of international law and global diplomacy and their role in the management of international security
